The origins of Lladró go back to the mid-1950s and the Spanish village of Almácera (Valencia). It was here that three sons of a modest farming family built a small Moorish kiln in the patio of their parents' home and began to experiment with making porcelain sculptures. Soon afterwards, thanks to their efforts and enthusiasm, they managed to set up a small artisan workshop where they began creating ceramic flowers. From these humble beginnings grew the company, which, today, is the international leader in the field of decorative porcelain. ![]() |
Each sculpture designed by Lladró artists is made up of several individual pieces; from which separate alabaster moulds are created. The necessary parts of the sculpture are made with porcelain paste and are then joined with liquid porcelain, acting as a fixing agent. Some of the exclusive pieces, especially the large group sculptures, are assembled from more than 200 separate pieces which are then hand painted, glazed and fired. City of Porcelain The first stone for the new centre of production was laid in 1969 and the following year the gates of the City of Porcelain opened in Tavernes Blanques, neighbouring Valencia. With installations of 100,000 sq. metres The City of Porcelain encompasses workshops, laboratories, show-rooms and offices as well as sports and leisure facilities for Lladró staff. Today, over 2100 artists, sculptors, painters, chemists and decorators are working here. Countless visitors and invited guests pass through the City of Porcelain every year, including famous personalities and celebrities from all around the world. |
