Lladro Porcelain

Origins

The origins of Lladró go back to the mid-1950s and the Spanish village of Almácera (Valencia). It was here that three sons of a modest farming family built a small Moorish kiln in the patio of their parents' home and began to experiment with making porcelain sculptures. Soon afterwards, thanks to their efforts and enthusiasm, they managed to set up a small artisan workshop where they began creating ceramic flowers. From these humble beginnings grew the company, which, today, is the international leader in the field of decorative porcelain.

Values

The Lladró brothers always wanted to create highly expressive works possessing the values of beauty and elegance. Their art celebrates the magic of life and transmits joyful sentiments. All concepts and things, which are good, noble and beautiful, are appropriate themes for Lladró creations.

Works

The works of the Lladró brothers are now recognized as the finest representation of porcelain art in the second half of the 20th century. They possess an unmistakable style that inherits many of its virtues from the outstanding porcelain of yesteryear, while admirably expressing the feelings and sensibilities of people today. These works come in a surprisingly rich variety of themes. Evoking emotions and experiences that we all share, the artistic creations of Lladró are given life by the sensitivity of master sculptors.

Handmade

The process, through which every Lladró sculpture will pass, from the very first sketch right to the firing stage, is entirely handcrafted. It involves artists and specialist artisans whose daily work has won worldwide admiration for Lladró porcelain, making each piece a unique work of art.

Moulds
Each sculpture designed by Lladró artists is made up of several individual pieces; from which separate alabaster moulds are created. The necessary parts of the sculpture are made with porcelain paste and are then joined with liquid porcelain, acting as a fixing agent. Some of the exclusive pieces, especially the large group sculptures, are assembled from more than 200 separate pieces which are then hand painted, glazed and fired.
City of Porcelain

The first stone for the new centre of production was laid in 1969 and the following year the gates of the City of Porcelain opened in Tavernes Blanques, neighbouring Valencia. With installations of 100,000 sq. metres The City of Porcelain encompasses workshops, laboratories, show-rooms and offices as well as sports and leisure facilities for Lladró staff. Today, over 2100 artists, sculptors, painters, chemists and decorators are working here. Countless visitors and invited guests pass through the City of Porcelain every year, including famous personalities and celebrities from all around the world.

New York

The Lladró Centre opened in 1988 at 43 West 57th Street in the centre of Manhattan. Incorporating the Lladró Gallery-Museum, it contains the world’s largest exhibition of Lladró sculptures. Many of the early works created by the Lladró brothers themselves are on display here.
