Celebrity Social Media Engagements

Posted on: 16/08/2022

Celebrities and influencers are able to earn a fortune from leveraging their social media followings, with some of the top influencers able to command tens of thousands for a singular sponsored post on Instagram.

There’s a recent trend of celebrities announcing their engagements on social media – Megan Fox, Avril Lavigne, and Perrie Edwards have all revealed their engagements on Instagram this year alone.

And while social media earnings are just one potential facet of the incomes that enable celebrities to lead such lavish lifestyles, the rise of Instagram engagement announcements got us thinking: factoring in the (sometimes astronomical) value of celebrity engagement rings – which couples’ social media followings could “earn” them enough to pay off their ring in full?

2022 Celebrity Engagement Ring Values

Celebrities are no strangers to extravagant proposals, and a vital component to this is the engagement ring itself. So, it’s no surprise that many of the couples that announced engagements this year have had a flashy engagement ring to mark the occasion.

From the ultra-rare natural green diamond Ben Affleck sourced for Jennifer Lopez, which industry experts have estimated to be worth around £6m, to the (relatively) more modest £290,000 Machine Gun Kelly is said to have spent on the engagement ring featuring his and Megan Fox’s birthstones, 2022 has seen celebrity engagements celebrated with style.

We analysed Google search data at the time celebrity couples announced their engagements to find the most talked about announcements, and of those, we’ve compiled valuations of the rings from industry experts to create an average value estimate:

CoupleAvg. value estimate
Jennifer Lopez & Ben Affleck£6,000,000
Avril Lavigne & Mod Sun£290,000
Megan Fox & Machine Gun Kelly£290,000
Simone Biles & Jonathan Owens£258,000
Perrie Edwards & Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain£250,000
Tom Hiddleston & Zawe Ashton£107,500
Sydney Sweeney & Jonathan Davino£102,500
Britney Spears & Sam Asghari£57,500
Joey King & Steven Piet£18,750
AOC & Riley Roberts£16,750

Aside from being extravagant displays of wealth, these engagements influence wider culture too – Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly’s engagement in January 2022 is the most talked about celebrity engagement of the past year, with 29,000 monthly searches for the topic following the announcement on Instagram. As of August 2022, Fox’s engagement announcement video on Instagram has been watched more than 34 million times.

Instagram earnings vs engagement ring values

Analysing the cost of celebrity engagement rings and the potential earnings they could make from monetised Instagram posts, we found that despite the hefty price tags many celebrity couples could pay off their engagement ring with just a handful of social media posts.

Megan Fox’s 20.3m Instagram followers means she could command an average of £45,006 per monetised post on the platform, according to insight gathered from the Instagram Calculator. At this rate, it’d take Fox just seven posts on the platform to recoup the £290,000 cost of the ring.

Leveraging fiancé Machine Gun Kelly’s 9.7m followers means an average windfall of £21,483 per post – he’d need to post 14 times himself to cover the cost of the ring.

Jennifer Lopez’s ring is reported to be the most expensive of the past year, with a value of £6m owing to the extreme rarity of its centrepiece natural green diamond. With the most followers on the platform of any of the celebrities researched, JLo could earn an average of £482,073 per post. The astronomical cost of the ring itself could be more than covered with 13 posts from the singer.

The celebrities that could pay for their engagement ring with the fewest Instagram posts

Some celebrities could more than cover the cost of their engagement ring with just a single monetised post – this includes popstar Britney Spears (0.63 posts to break even), actress Joey King (0.45), and politician Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (0.87).

Joey King 19,000,000 £18,750 £41,959 0.45

Jennifer Lopez 218,000,000 £6,000,000 £482,073 12.45

NFL player Jonathan Owens would have to make the most Instagram posts to pay off the engagement ring he gave to gymnast Simone Biles. The ring is estimated to cost around £258,000 – Owens’ 266,415 Instagram followers could net him just £887 per post on average. Owens would have to monetise more than 290 posts on the platform to break even on the ring cost.

While the majority of people may not be able to rely on their enormous social media presence to recoup the cost of an engagement ring, make sure to look through our selection of engagement rings to ensure you have everything you need for your own Hollywood proposal.
