How To Propose To Your Partner Based On Their Star Sign
Posted on: 03/12/2021There are few decisions in life bigger than the one to propose, and few nights more momentous than the one you decide to get down on one knee.
Knowing that the proposal – and the fortunes of your relationship – could have been decided by the alignment of the stars before you even met your partner is certainly an intimidating prospect, but it’s one believed by the almost five million Brits who place emphasis on astrological compatibility when dating.
According to our survey of 2,000 UK adults, over a fifth (21%) of Brits search for specific star signs in potential partners, as they believe this will make them more compatible. Millennials are the most in tune with astrology, with almost three in five (59%) believing it has an effect on romance, and almost one in six (14%) narrowing their pool of potential love interests down to compatible star signs.
Through analysis of Google search data, we have also discovered that the festive season could be one of the most popular times of the year for Brits to get engaged. According to Google Trends, the term “engagement rings” has seen massive spikes in searches around the end of November and mid-December every year in the past five years*.
To inspire those thinking of proposing this Christmas, we’ve partnered with an astrologer to find out just how much the stars affect our romantic endeavours, and what each zodiac sign’s ideal engagement scenario would be.
Which star signs are compatible?
With more than a fifth of singletons seeking partners with a compatible sign, we asked astrologer and crystal healer Bex Milford of Cosmic Cures which star signs are most well matched according to the stars.
Aries: Sagittarius and Libra
Taurus: Cancer and Scorpio
Gemini: Aquarius and Sagittarius
Leo: Libra and Aquarius
Virgo: Pisces and Capricorn
Libra: Leo and Aries
Scorpio: Taurus and Cancer
Sagittarius: Gemini and Aries
Capricorn: Pisces and Virgo
Aquarius: Leo and Gemini
Pisces: Virgo and Capricorn
Now you know which signs are compatible with yours – is your relationship written in the stars?
The best engagement ring styles for each star sign
Bex says that Taurus, Cancer, Virgos and Capricorns would prefer a traditional style engagement ring, where other signs would appreciate more of a “statement piece”.
“Taurus is ruled by Venus, so something classically beautiful where the rock really stands out would be a great choice. When it comes to the stone, emerald and the colour green are usually associated with this sign, and since Taurus is an Earth Sign, a style like art nouveau could link really nicely”, says Bex.
Cancer is the sign most linked to nostalgia and history, so a ring that’s a family heirloom, or a ring with a ‘story’ attached to it would be ideal. Bex says that pearls and silver would be particularly appealing to this star sign.
For a Virgo, blue sapphire or yellow agate should be the stone of choice. This is a sign that values clean and simple looks, so nothing too ornate.
Capricorns are most associated with gemstones and the earth – a simple band where the stone is the standout would work best. Go for a diamond, or alternatively onyx, garnet and amber, which are all connected to Capricorn.
If your partner is Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Aquarius, or Pisces, you’re free to go bolder with your choice of ring. Gemini signs in particular would love a more modern design – Gemini is associated with communication too, so an engraving on the ring might be cherished. And for Aquarius, this is a sign that rails against tradition, so something eclectic – potentially one-of-a-kind – would be the best bet.
The perfect proposals for each star sign
Every star sign has a different approach to relationships and commitment, more so when marriage and proposals are involved.
But there are similarities: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Virgo, Libra, and Capricorn are all willing to be bold, and will drop hints they want to be proposed to when in a long-term relationship.
However, Cancer, Leo, Sagittarius, Aquarius, and Pisces signs are more subtle, and are less likely to speak directly to their partners if they’re thinking of taking the next step in the relationship.
The star signs that prefer extravagant proposals
If your partner is an Aries, Gemini, Leo, Sagittarius, or Aquarius, you might want to go bold with your proposal plans. These signs are more inclined to an ‘adventurous’ proposal according to Bex, so audacious engagements will go down best.
Think unique and eccentric – Leo’s are known to be competitive, so something in public, or something with a ‘story’ like hiding an engagement ring would go down best. An Aries might like something classically romantic, think sunsets, a hot air balloon ride, or even a spur of the moment proposal if you’re feeling brave!
“Friends and sociability are important to Gemini, so they wouldn’t mind being proposed to in front of a group, especially their pals,” Bex says. “They’re known for being puzzle solvers, cerebral, and appreciating the unique and quirky side of life too, so perhaps something unusual like a treasure hunt!”
Sagittarius is associated with adventure, global travel, and excitement, as well as risk taking, so a proposal while on holiday or travelling would be ideal – particularly if the occasion is marked with an adventurous activity.
Aquarius signs, meanwhile, are not known for being traditional – so anything unique or outlandish could go down well.
Opt for a traditional proposal with these star signs
Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Capricorn, and Pisces signs would be less enthused by a statement proposal, instead preferring something more traditional and intimate.
A romantic meal at home, or a luxury hotel might appeal to a Taurus, according to Bex: “Taurus is the sign most associated with the 5 senses and luxury but also the comforts of home, so a home-made candlelit dinner with plenty of roses and Champagne or chocolate dipped strawberries would be appreciated. Alternatively, a gorgeous and glamorous hotel somewhere would be a perfect choice! They’d want to be able to savour the moment.”
Cancer values tradition, so taking them to a special place that has meaning in the relationship would go down a treat. Our astrologer suggests having a camera nearby to capture the moment, as this is a sign that loves keepsakes. If you want to go all in on tradition, asking for the parents’ blessing first would be appreciated by a Cancer.
“Virgos are pretty unassuming so nothing too wild or extravagant – they’d probably roll their eyes! They’re also not wildly traditional so anything that was too linked to the conventions of marriage wouldn’t impress them so much,” Bex says. “As an Earth sign then something involving nature – a beautiful sunset, a moonlit walk, a hike and then proposal at the top of a mountain – would be enjoyed.”
Libra is the sign most linked to marriage – so if this is your partner, you’ll want to ensure a traditional proposal like a restaurant, romantic cruise, or even a gorgeously set out picnic. Similarly, Capricorn will appreciate effort and commitment – nothing too spur of the moment. A classic restaurant, with champagne and maybe even a live band present, would go down best.
Scorpio signs would value something meaningful, private, and not too extravagant, so somewhere secluded, or even at home, is the best location for you to get down on one knee. Pisces, meanwhile, would value a proposal set against a beach or body of water – they are a water sign, after all.
Whether you choose to go for an adventurous or a traditional proposal, just remember the most important thing is to make it an unforgettable moment that you and your partner will cherish for the rest of your lives.
