Christmas Gift Politics - A Study

Posted on: 30/10/2018

When did you last receive an unsatisfactory gift? Did you let the gift-giver know your thoughts or keep your displeasure to yourself to save their feelings?

If you’ve ever found yourself seriously reconsidering your choice in partner after being presented with a gift that didn’t meet your expectations, you’re not alone. According to our survey results, just over a quarter (26%) of Brits would revaluate their relationship if they received a disappointing Christmas present. That’s a lot of unhappy recipients on Christmas morning!

With the festive season fast approaching, we have become fascinated with the politics of gift-giving here at F.Hinds. To find out what we think of the gift-giving process here in the UK, from how much to spend to what to buy, read on…

Getting it Right

When it comes to making sure the gift is perfect, expectations are high – especially for those in Belfast. Almost half of those surveyed in Northern Ireland’s capital (42%) are likely to rethink their relationship if they’re not given a great gift on 25th December.

Over in England, more than a quarter of those asked in Leeds and Southampton would start questioning their relationship if the gift isn’t right. This goes up to a third in London, Manchester, Birmingham and Norwich.

Overall, we found that women are more than twice as likely than men to ponder their partner choice if they’ve been given a present that doesn’t suit them. No pressure, then!

Popular First-Time Christmas Presents

If you’re in a new relationship, you may be inspired by our round-up of the nation’s favourite gifts to give their partner for their first Christmas together. Topping the chart is fragrance, with 38% of Brits choosing to gift aftershave or perfume, and over half of those in Newcastle (57%) are pushing for fragrance as a present.

This was closely followed by jewellery. Over a quarter (27%) give jewellery and overall, men are most likely to give jewellery to their partner (45%) for their first festive season together.

Should you be in Sheffield, 47% of respondents opt for fine jewels for a first-time Christmas gift. Interestingly, those in the 18-24-year-old age bracket are most likely to buy jewellery for their partner (30%), so for young people in South Yorkshire, the odds of being given something sparkly are pretty high.

Elsewhere in the top give on the first-time Christmas gift list, clothes and music – including CDs and vinyl – came in at joint number three (21%); books were fourth at 17%; and gift cards were number five at 15%.

Hey, Big Spender!

When we do buy gifts, we go all-out. Almost 50,000 people in Glasgow are happy to spend over £500 on their partner for their first Christmas together, while almost half of the UK would spend up to £50. The majority of British men we asked (55%) will go over the £50 mark, and well over half (68%) of 25-34-year-olds would clear that figure, too.

Waiting Game

As well as the politics of what to buy and how much to spend, there’s also the issue of how soon is too soon when it comes to jumping in and buying Christmas presents. How long to wait before buying a gift is a minefield – as the stats show.

Couples who have been together less than two months are least likely to give a gift, with 37% playing it safe. If you fall in the 25-34-year-old age bracket and you’ve been with your partner less than six months, you’re in the group that’s most likely to hold off buying a present.

However, we’re all romantics deep down: more men (43%) than women (29%) are likely to buy a present for their partner after a month together, and 16% of Brits would get something for their partner, even if they’ve only been together for a week.
