How To Plan An Engagement Proposal

Posted on: 10/07/2023
Planning to pop the question? There are plenty of weird and wonderful ways to propose to a partner, but knowing how to plan a proposal isn't something that comes naturally to everybody, and that's OK. So, by having a plan in place it can help make sure that the big occasion runs that little bit smoother, even when it’s a more understated engagement.

While some people turn to so-called 'proposal planners', most prefer a more authentic, homegrown approach. Here's how to propose the right way so that you feel fully prepared.

Have a Place In Mind

When working out how to plan a proposal, think of somewhere with sentimental value to mark your milestone, whether it's on holiday, during a hike, or even at home. While it's important to have an idea of the setting for your proposal, you should make sure your plans are flexible.

Have a few places in mind and select one that feels right when the moment nears. For example, you may have a favourite beach, but due to the weather, a special restaurant might be more appropriate.

Choose A Window

Some people find it helpful to aim for a rough window of time so that they can carry the ring and pull it out when the moment is right. While it's common to have the ring on you for a couple of days, you don't really want to be in the same situation weeks or months down the line!

You might not have an exact time in mind, but a time frame of some kind can be helpful, whether it’s a particular evening or a trip away. You might find that your chosen setting gives you ideas on how to propose to your partner. Remember, if the moment doesn’t come, there’s no harm in waiting a little longer for another window. Just make sure you don't overthink it too much because if you're both on the same page, your partner will be ecstatic regardless.

Speak To Your Partner's Loved Ones

While it's an old tradition, out of respect, many still decide to speak to their partner's loved ones ahead of a proposal. Plus, it means you can share the excitement together and even pick up some ideas for the proposal itself.

They could also help you coordinate it if needs be, by helping to set up everything and prompting your partner to be in the right place at the right time, therefore easing additional pressure on your side. It can be especially handy to ask for tips from anyone with experience on how to propose to help settle any nerves.

Get The Right Ring

Perhaps the most important part when figuring out how to propose is to secure the perfect engagement ring ahead of the big day. You might find this a simpler task if you’ve had previous conversations with your partner, however, most people are in the dark. But there are ways around this.

Firstly, if you don’t already have your partner’s ring size, ask friends or family so that you’re good to go. Then, when it comes to choosing the ring, consider your partner’s tastes and don’t shy away from asking for help in the jewellery store. If you're still unsure, you could buy a less expensive ring with the promise that you can choose the perfect one together.

Have Your Speech Ready

For many people, their greatest fear is to stumble over their words during an important occasion. When it comes to knowing how to plan a proposal, a lot of it comes down to what you feel comfortable doing.

Although the traditional proposal wording is succinct, it can be helpful to rehearse it a few times so that it comes more naturally. And if you'd prefer, you can add a personal and sentimental lead-up to let your partner know how much they mean to you.
