What Our Jewellery Choices Say About Us

Posted on: 16/03/2022

Jewellery choices are extremely personal and also have the potential to be rather sentimental. But what does our individual look say about us? We spoke to Dennis Relojo-Howell, founder and managing director of psychology website Psychreg about how it is possible to read someone’s personality based on their jewellery choices. Dennis explains that jewellery is often seen by individuals as an extension of themselves, communicating individualism and breaking the mould of standardisation that is so often present in fashion.

Wedding Rings

What could be more personal than a wedding/engagement ring – for many people it is one of the most precious items they will ever own. However, as well as being a symbol of everlasting love, a wedding or engagement ring can give a large amount of insight into the type of person you are.

Yellow gold rings indicate a sentimental character, whilst white gold shows sophistication and rose gold suggests a desire to stand out from the crowd. The shape of the stone also allows an insight into the personality of the wearer; a circular cut is for the traditionalist, whereas the rectangular set is a sign of someone with a bold and alternative attitude.

Then there are those who opt for a ring with single or multiple stones. Dennis believes that a single stone engagement ring signifies commitment and fidelity, with those who wear this ring more like to be loyal and passionate. Muti stone engagement ring wearers are slightly different, being extremely sentimental and very preoccupied with details.

Chain necklaces

Our love of necklace chains seems to show no sign of abating and the current trend has seen them grow bigger and chunkier. Dennis believes that chunky chain wearers are keen to convey confidence and authority through their jewellery choice. There are however those who still love a dainty and delicate chain, perhaps accompanied with a charm. By contrast, these individuals may be more reserved.

Bangles

Made popular by Love Island where many islanders chose to style torc bangles with their villa looks, this is now a popular trend adopted by many. But what does it say about the personality of those who have chosen to adopt this look? Dennis claims that the appearance of bangles indicates a social and bubbly personality, especially when paired with a pair of hoop earrings.

Charms

The wearing of charms is a guaranteed way to showcase personality in your jewellery as there is so much flexibility and choice available. Charm wearers tend to be extremely down to earth according to Dennis and they can often be sustainably minded.

Stacked earrings

Having multiple ear piercings enables the wearer to showcase different levels of their personality. They may choose to mix stud earrings with more ornamental, chunkier pieces or alternatively, keep the whole look low key. The stacking of earrings tends to reflect a modern view and a desire to showcase and individual personality.

Celebrity styles to steal

With our jewellery choices giving off so many signals, the below guide has been put together for those looking to shake up their ‘jewellery personality’. Taking inspiration from the world of celebrity, the guide offers inspiration for different messages, covering everything from those looking to stand out in a social setting, through to professional go getters and people looking to rebel.

  • The Elegant One – in addition to being classically beautiful, elegance needs to be aspirational and appeal to most people. Timeless icons such as Audrey Hepburn and Kate Middleton embody this look perfectly with their matching necklaces, earrings and bracelets and the occasional tiara.
  • The Confident One – statement pieces that provide a topic of conversation are what sets those filled with confidence apart from their peers. Personified in acting royalty, Emma Thompson, her eclectic pieces of jewellery stand up against her strong personality.
  • The Approachable One – down to earth and sustainable, people with this style show themselves to be accessible and easy to get along with. Think of Cate Blanchette as your inspiration.
  • The Trend Setter – often futuristic in design, this jewellery serves as inspiration for all walks of life. Adele is the perfect example of a trend setter who wants to offer guidance on romance and career prospects.
  • The Rebel – above all, the rebel wants to stand out and who could embody this better than Billie Eilish with her visually striking bone jewellery.
  • Life Of the Party – the jewellery this personality shows that they enjoy the spotlight and being sociable. Playful and charismatic in style, take inspiration from Justin Bieber or Dua Lipa.
  • Everybody’s Friend – warm and playful at the same time, people with this jewellery style instinctively know how to respect boundaries and come into their own around friends and family. Think of JLo as the perfect example.
  • The Go-Getter – those with this personality trait have very detailed and futuristic tastes in jewellery. Very much like Ariana Grande they are hard working and value a structured approach to life.
  • The Perfectionist – this character trait is focussed on the smallest details, with a need to make them match perfectly. With Ed Sheeran as a style icon, there’s not much that can go wrong with this style due to the nature of the perfectionist.
  • The Multi-Tasker – there is often a lot going on with the jewellery look of the multi tasker as they are able to manage a lot at once, making everything work seamlessly together. Those looking to emulate this style should look to Zendaya.

Dennis’ diagnosis

When talking about how important jewellery is for the individual, Dennis commented: “Jewellery is a vehicle for personal statements. For instance, the down-to-earth personality type is defined as someone who is free of pretension and doesn’t put on a front, but who is instead simple and straightforward, with acute awareness and an interest in the natural world around them. These personalities tend to favour simple, sustainable and timeless designs or a coordinated look.

“On the other hand, there are those people who always prefer staying in the spotlight, be it through their actions or their fashion accessories. Statement pieces such as multi-layered pendants are their go-to pieces. These personality types are confident, assured and independent and everywhere they go, they want to make their mark.”
