A silver chain is a must-have in any jewellery box. They are a timeless classic, whether layered with other necklaces or dressed up with a locket or pendant.
Silver has many benefits that explain its growing popularity in recent years. It can have hypoallergenic properties, if alloyed with nickel-free metals, while Rhodium-plated silver offers additional protection. Silver is also incredibly long-lasting; a vintage pure silver chain can have a gorgeous shine again after a simple polish.
All our real silver chains are hallmarked to vouch for their authenticity. With an array of different silver chains to choose from, from style and type to length and quality, you'll find a stunning new piece at F.Hinds.
Are you looking for something in particular? Our skilled craftsmen can turn your ideas into reality with our bespoke jewellery service. A one-off custom piece is also a sentimental way to wow someone special.
How to gift the perfect silver chain
Consider their style
Think carefully about what the person likes and dislikes. What kind of jewellery do you see them wearing? Is it usually bold or understated? This will help you to stay on track when browsing.
Think about their current collection
Can you find a gift to complement an existing piece of their jewellery? If they have a locket, a thick silver chain would be a practical and thoughtful gift. If they have a statement necklace that would look beautiful with layering, a thin silver chain would be a great choice.
Factor in their lifestyle
A gift is an opportunity to show your loved one that you care for them – and what better way to convey that message than by paying attention to the small details. If the recipient plays a lot of sports, a more durable silver chain, like a box or rope chain, shows that you are considering them.

FAQs about silver chains
How do I know what length silver chain to choose?
At F.Hinds, our silver chain necklaces typically range from 16" to 30". However, we do sometimes have pieces that go above this length.
To ensure the best possible fit, we recommend that you:
1. Measure the recipient's neck circumference: Place a cloth tape measure around the base of the neck.
For women, 13.1 inches is the average. And for men, 15.2 inches is the average.
2. Decide how you want it to fit: If you want the silver chain to hold a pendant, a longer fit is usually preferable. However, if you'd like it to sit higher up, say near the collarbone, a shorter length is best.
3. Factor in the recipient's height: The smaller or taller the person wearing the chain is, the more likely it is to hang lower or higher. Consider this when choosing the length to allow for some wiggle room.
What's the difference between sterling silver and pure silver?
The distinction between sterling silver and pure silver is the purity. Pure silver has a purity of at least 99.9%, but it's very soft in this form, meaning it isn't ideal for jewellery making as it can easily be scratched or dented. Sterling silver has 92.5% purity, and the rest is alloyed with other metals like copper for added strength. Because of this, sterling silver chains are more durable.
However, if you have sensitive skin, it's important to note that some sterling silver may contain nickel, so it's worth checking the composition before wearing it.
How should I care for my real silver chain?
1. Avoid wearing it whilst applying perfume or moisturiser – this can tarnish the metal and create dirt build-up.
2. To clean your silver chain, soak it in warm water and plain soap for 10 minutes, brush gently and dry. If a more thorough clean is needed, use a gentle brush after soaking in equal parts white vinegar and water.
3. Book in for a jewellery MOT every 3 years – our jewellers can assess and potentially fix scratches, broken clasps and cracks or fractures in the metal.
4. Store your chain separately from other jewellery in a cushioned section of your jewellery box – this will prevent scratches and tarnishing.
