Why Ear Piercing Aftercare Is So Important – How To Look After Your New Ear Piercing

Posted on: 22/08/2022

When you have your ears pierced with us in store, we use Studex’s ear piercing System 75 which means that the jewellery is pre-sterilised and hygienic. Although this part of the ear piercing process is important, proper aftercare is just as, if not more, necessary than the ear piercing itself.

We always highlight the importance of the aftercare instruction to ensure that your new piercing remains clean and heals without any issues. As part of our established service, you will be supplied with detailed aftercare instructions from our piercer. You will also receive a FREE bottle of Ear Piercing Aftercare solution at the time of your piercing as well as having the opportunity to upgrade to the Advanced Aftercare Solution.

If you do opt to upgrade to our Advanced Solution, you will only need to carry out the aftercare for 3 weeks, rather than the usual 6 weeks. The Advanced formulation has been developed to cleanse and soothe the new piercing site whilst speeding up skin recovery. It actively kills any bacteria and closes the pores, adding extra protection.

Ear Piercing Aftercare Advice

Here’s your handy checklist for keeping your new ear piercing healthy, fresh and clean:

  • Always wash your hands before touching your new piercing
  • Apply your chosen aftercare solution with either a cotton pad or bud. You should clean your piercing 2-3 times per day and make sure you are cleaning between the jewellery and the ear. Our safety ear piercing stud backs are open to make sure they are easy to clean
  • Rotate your earrings with little half turns when cleaning. Do not spin the earring in full turns as it can cause hair to become wrapped around the post
  • Follow the aftercare steps for the full healing period. And pop into our store for your 3-6 week check up
  • After the healing period is complete you can carefully remove your piercing jewellery and clean the site thoroughly front and back. You should then make sure that you put earrings back in to prevent the hole from closing. You can choose to put your piercing earrings back in or swap them for another pair – do not forget to use your 20% off voucher in store.
  • To maintain the healing, you should keep earrings in regularly for 6 months. We all heal at a different rate, and we would hate for your new piercing to close, which is can within a few days without wearing jewellery.

What to Avoid

You will want to avoid playing with and touching your ear piercing when you are not cleaning it. Sometimes it can be tempting to fiddle with a piercing, and we suggest that you resist the urge at all costs to avoid any bacteria getting into it and causing infection.

Please do not push the butterfly backs along your ear piercing post. It may be tempting to move them closer to the back of the ear lobe, but this can lead to problems with swelling. Rest assured that the butterfly back is positioned in exactly the right place at the time of piercing to allow the correct spacing for optimum healing and cleaning.

It is possible for the piercing site to look a little bit red and feel a little hot afterwards, we would not expect to see any sign of swelling or irritation several days after a piercing if the proper aftercare has been followed. If you are experiencing any discomfort with your piercing make sure you contact your local store again so we can give you further advice.
